Article: WHAT'S IN YOUR CANDLE?

WHAT'S IN YOUR CANDLE?

WHAT'S IN YOUR CANDLE?

we’ve said it a thousand times, but here it goes again: we hand pour each and every candle at our HQ in Miami, so we know what goes into our products: no junk and a whole lotta love. we carefully source every single ingredient that goes inside your candle – from the wax to the fragrances… no secret ingredients and no additives, because that’s how it should be. whether you shop TAJA candles or not, we still want to make sure you know what’s inside your candles.

we use 100% premium soy wax that’s vegan and cruelty free. we add essential oil or fragrance to the candles, and voila, that’s all.

so what’s all the fuss with wax additives? there are a lot of additives out there that are used to create blended waxes and ensure that the candle stays in the same condition regardless of the time it sits on the shelf for. the two most common used additives for wax candles are:

  1. Polymers: used to improve the appearance and performance of the candle
  2. Individual based solution additives: these include ingredients like Lustre Crystals, Benzophenones, Polysorbate – to name a few. These are mostly used to reduce discoloration and keep an even appearance of the candle.

these additives are bad for your health because they’ve been linked to producing cancer-causing chemicals like benzene and formaldehyde.

it’s natural for ingredients to face chemical discolorations if there’s not another active ingredient preventing it from happening. think: fast food stays the same for months… apples rot in a week! repeat after me: slight discoloration is not a bad thing – it simply means your candle was likely made without additives. (note: the discoloration goes away as soon as you light your candle!)

when it comes to fragrances, we are just as uncompromising as we are with our wax. none of our fragrances are tested on animals and are safe for the skin (we still don’t recommend rubbing your custom candles on your skin). when you light your custom made candle, you are inhaling the fumes, so it’s even more important to know what’s inside, or sometimes more importantly, what’s NOT inside. some of the toxins that are listed below (that we never have or will use in our candles) have been linked to dangerous side effects.

TAJA’s non-negotiable NO list:

  • phthalates
  • Parabens
  • synthetic dyes
  • formaldehyde and formaldehyde donors
  • nonyl phenols (NPE)
  • triclosan
  • triclocarban
  • BHA (beta hydroxy acid)
  • hydroquinone
  • sodium laureth sulfate (SLS /SLES)
  • perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)
  • genetically modified organisms, palm oil or palm derived ingredients.
  • animal testing

so the next time you light your candle, make sure you know what’s inside. rest assured, when you choose custom made candles from TAJA Collection, you’re choosing thoughtfully chosen, non-toxic ingredients. burn responsibly!
